Thinking about getting a EV. Just curious why you got yours. The reasons I can think of are:
- Environmentally friendly 🌵
- Cheaper Fuel ⚡️
- They are cool/trendy 😎
- Lower maintenance 🔧
Is there anything surprising that you found out after you bought it?

Is there anything surprising that you found out after you bought it?
1a. Reduced maintenance. As an engineer, I can appreciate the benefits of a simple, closed system like motors + batteries.
1b. Overnight charging. It’s like having a car that needs no fuel, because electricity is so cheap in Phoenix and plugging in takes just a few seconds and becomes a habit that you forget about. You no longer bother keeping track of the “tank”.
1c. Electric climate control. This being independent of the drivetrain is such a boon. Preconditioning in enclosed garages is no longer a worry, so I can do it no matter what and never have to drive a hot car. Unlike some older ICE’s, cooling works equally well at all speeds, and heat is provided instantly.
1d. Clean technology integration. This is not specific to EV’s, but Tesla’s software (minus vision, which is horrible) is incredible. Everything works pretty much seamlessly, the app is seamless, navigation on long trips is incredibly helpful and accurate with the supercharger network. One pedal driving also makes stop and go traffic much less mentally burdensome, as does autopilot.
Significantly less urban air pollution. This is especially important in Phoenix.
Future proofing. I believe EV’s are the way of the future, and therefore getting experience with them will result in the least disruption to my life. I learned a considerable amount since buying an EV.
It was a reward. I passed some major life milestones, and felt it fitting. Yes, people can be shallow! 😎
