Thinking about getting a EV. Just curious why you got yours. The reasons I can think of are:

  • Environmentally friendly 🌵
  • Cheaper Fuel ⚡️
  • They are cool/trendy 😎
  • Lower maintenance 🔧

Is there anything surprising that you found out after you bought it?

    1. I got a job in the burbs after a public transit commute downtown. I’m in the city planning sphere and didn’t like the fact that I was adding vehicle miles traveled to my life, but at least I’ve eliminated my tailpipe emissions when doing so. My power generation mix in my town is already better than average and is aggressively improving.
    2. I’m done being a “car guy” and don’t want to have to think about my car. Getting it smogged, oil changes, etc. are chores I don’t want.
    3. Honestly once you stop going to gas stations, you realize how disgusting they are.

Fun to drive. Living on island and able to charge at home means I have zero downside vs ICE. Save money. I like technology. Environmental reasons.

We had multiple gas cars. Bought our first Tesla to be more environmentally friendly. Ended up just choosing the Tesla to drive all the time. Replaced most of our gas cars.

Autopilot for my 1.5 hour commute in heavy traffic… Everything else was a bonus, great performance, cheaper than a gas car (in SoCal), maintenance, quiet, no emissions.

Minimizing costs for commuting. I keep a C7 Z06 for track days, and weekend road warrior tasks.

My MY-Perf is mainly for commuting, ease of use(never getting gas) and cost savings overall. I have a solar array so the power is “free-ish”

Maintenance. I buy cars and hold them for a decade or more, and I’m hoping that the electric cars will have less maintenance. No smog checks, no oil changes, etc etc. Tires are a negative with electric cars, though, due to the heavier weight, they need new tires more often.

After driving an EV I couldn’t care about the environment part (still a positive) but they really are superior vehicles in general

    1. Elegance of the driving experience. A lot of the difficulties that normal cars present are just gone with EV’s. It’s like being able to teleport places - the car disappears. This is the result of…

1a. Reduced maintenance. As an engineer, I can appreciate the benefits of a simple, closed system like motors + batteries.

1b. Overnight charging. It’s like having a car that needs no fuel, because electricity is so cheap in Phoenix and plugging in takes just a few seconds and becomes a habit that you forget about. You no longer bother keeping track of the “tank”.

1c. Electric climate control. This being independent of the drivetrain is such a boon. Preconditioning in enclosed garages is no longer a worry, so I can do it no matter what and never have to drive a hot car. Unlike some older ICE’s, cooling works equally well at all speeds, and heat is provided instantly.

1d. Clean technology integration. This is not specific to EV’s, but Tesla’s software (minus vision, which is horrible) is incredible. Everything works pretty much seamlessly, the app is seamless, navigation on long trips is incredibly helpful and accurate with the supercharger network. One pedal driving also makes stop and go traffic much less mentally burdensome, as does autopilot.

    1. Significantly less urban air pollution. This is especially important in Phoenix.

    2. Future proofing. I believe EV’s are the way of the future, and therefore getting experience with them will result in the least disruption to my life. I learned a considerable amount since buying an EV.

    3. It was a reward. I passed some major life milestones, and felt it fitting. Yes, people can be shallow! 😎

    1. High/unstable gas prices
    2. Less environmentally impactful use (yeah, I know making them bends the enviro positive story…)

In order of importance to me -

    1. “Environment” - really me just being anti-oil company and anti-OPEC, but slowing down climate change (because let’s be real here, we’re not stopping it) is nice too. Also nice to have better air because all those other filthy tailpipe fumes are done away with, nit just the CO2
    2. Cheaper fuel - I have free L2 at work, if they’re gonna force us back into the office, I’m gonna milk that for all it’s worth. Also I like the “cost certainty” of knowing what electricity is going to cost per kWh at all times, when the power company raises rates they have to get permission from the state, no more nerve wracking OPEC roller coaster ride (see above). Also love knowing the cars will be ready if/when I ever install panels on this house (roof here is 18 years old so that has to come first though)
    3. Fast, fun cars with cool tech that also look nice. My MME is in Grabber Blue and my kids are borderline obsessed with it.

I have bought Tesla. 1. No car dealer, no negotiations. 2. No maintenance 3. No gas stations and I also don’t use superchargers, but their abundance is nice to have

My EV is a moped, equivalent to a 50cc one. Very handy when going downtown, can be parked anywhere.

But for a car… not getting one, before their prices and ranges reach about the same as gasoline ones.
