I find it amazing how no politicians really call out republican use of “urban” when we all know they mean “black”.

And they still think it’s subtle and clever, and that they “get away with it”… They’re so fucking dumb.

She even got the inflection the way you would if you were using air quotes around a word. Verbal italics, if you will.

If you zoom in enough you’ll see it was actually written into the speech as “uRbAn”

Kenny: “can’t you pick the lock?”

Lee: “what makes you think that?”

Kenny: “you know, because you’re… urban”

      Lee: “what did you say?”

Kenny: “sorry I’m from Florida stupid shit comes out my mouth all the time”

It truly depends on context. “Urban” is the nom de guerre of marketing specialists when talking about Black consumers. It’s called the “euphemism treadmill”. Over time, things that were not considered offensive become offensive, and you have to concoct more tactful language. Saying “mentally retarded” used to be a medical term, now it’s “developmentally delayed” and even that is now falling out of vogue.

Surprisingly, I don’t think it was supposed to mean “black” here. Felt more like the “he’s ignoring everyone not living in a city, something something liberal elites” line to me. Really could go either way though, it’s not like the shit she says makes any sense.
