Dianne is part of a thin Senate majority and on the judiciary committee. If she were to retire now, governor Newsome would name a replacement and set up a special election. But, that replacement would not have her senority in the Senate or on committee. So, should something happen, like Biden nominating a new judge, it could turn into a real shitshow.
