Aye. I remember it being big news worldwide that she tore up a picture of the pope. It was only decades later that I found out it was to protest molestations.

I remember it well and pretty much everyone at the time was baffled because the scandal just wasn’t that well-known outside of specific Catholic circles yet. Which just gave priests more time and more coverage until it actually started coming out in a big way a few years ago. It should have started the ball rolling then and there, but ripping up a picture of the pope and saying, “fight the real enemy” without giving context did not help the case.

The Catholic Church is a criminal organization, and I mean what I say. It’s high-ranking officials should be on trial.

She was ahead of the curve. Every pope is a bastard including the current, Pope “Molesty-up-cover” Francis.

True. One of the last ones were in Hitler Jugend but let’s forgive and forget simple wrongdoings like being pro Nazi or raping children

No, honestly, as much as I dislike every Pope, that one wasn’t his fault.

Hitler Youth was not optional, and they absolutely hurt and abused children under their care. I know because I know someone who was forced into that situation and suffers lasting trauma from it.

It was in protest to the Catholic Church’s treatment of women. The molestation scandal came out about fifteen years later

She literally added the lyric “child abuse” to her performance of “War” prior to tearing up the photo.

Which was a reference to the abuse she suffered in the Irish Laundries. Are you aware she was in one as a teen?

Source? According to Wikipedia it was the molestations, for which the pope apologised 9 years later, so 15 seems far fetched.

Edit: Granted, at the time all she said was Fight the real evil, so no wonder people were confused.

The two sources wikipedia uses to make that claim are from after the scandal broke and neither quote O’Connor.

The first apology I can fund fir sex abuse is 2008 so 17 years later

In 1991 people joked about priests raping kids but it was not common knowledge that the problem was widespread at the time.

I was in college and saw her do it live. I thought it was strange, but had no idea what grandiose aftermath there would be.
